PROJECT PET: Rehabilitating Hector WEEK 3
In the introduction of PROJECT PET: Rehabilitating Hector we stated that K-9 Kraving wants to reestablish Hector’s dignity through optimally nurturing him internally. We also want to give him a strong body, a shiny, healthy coat. Closing out week three, we are getting closer and closer to that goal.
As viewed in our week three video, Hector has received a good report and his Rabies vaccination from Dr. Bonner. Bonner is Hector’s general veterinarian through Stop Killing Dogs Rescue. Additionally, Hector received a much need grooming.
It may be my over-active imagination, but I would swear that Hector was strutting when his grooming was complete.
To celebrate these small milestones, we purchased an ID tag to accompany his Rabies tag on a new collar donated by Susan Harrington. Harrington, a local Baltimore artist and designer, has been very generous in donating her beautiful handmade collars to local fund raisers for shelter animals. It was an honor to receive her gift for Hector.
Returning once more to the beginning of PROJECT PET, we had shared Hector’s story “as we knew it”. Based on records that stemmed from Hector’s arrival to BARCS, we pieced his story together best as possible. Since then, a surprising twist to this story has surfaced that adds clarity and a sweeter beginning to Hector’s second chance journey…
On Monday evening, March 30th, 2009, Stop Killing Dogs Rescue received this e-mail:
Hey all!
I was so so so so ecstatic to find (actually my girlfriend found the link off petfinder) to see that you have rescued Hector. I found him wandering outside my high school in East Baltimore on a really cold, wet day. Chased him across traffic and got him into my car. I left him there for four hours before I had time to take him down to BARCS. Gave him my lunch, left my car running and had my students go out and check
on him.
When I called back to check on him, they mentioned his age and arthritis. I didn’t want to call back anymore for fear of getting bad news. I sent out an email to all my fellow staff members about possibly adopting him. My girlfriend and I already have two stray rescues in our apartment and couldn’t possibly have fit another.
I attached 4 pictures that I took of him the day that I found him. They were taken on my phone and aren’t great but wanted to pass them on nonetheless.
Thanks again. You made my evening!!!!!
Take care and keep up the awesome work!!!!

The benefits of feeding raw are great and K-9 Kraving is pleased to be a part of providing Hector a second lease on life. Moreover, it has been our reward to watch the swelling of human kindness that surrounds one little dog whose original identity and story remains a mystery.
We look forward to sharing more about Hector next week that includes a visit with Dr. Krista Evans, DVM, Diplomate ACVS of the Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Annapolis, Maryland. Dr. Evans will be consulting and evaluating what is causing Hector’s rear right leg to quiver.
We will also be visiting Dr. Ira Luskin, med vet, FAVD, Diplomate, AVDC of the Animal Dental Center in Towson, Maryland in the coming week. Luskin will be consulting the holes in Hector’s mouth that resulted from a, most likely unnatural, loss of his canines.
Week 4 will be posted on Wednesday, April 8, 2009.
